Hochjoch-Schruns in Austria (in the Vorarlberg region) is a large resort with 11 lifts (2 gondola, 7 chair lifts, 2 surface lifts) that offers skiers an incredible 1680 metres (5512 feet) of vertical descent. Hochjoch-Schruns has 14 pistes with a total length of 43 kilometers (27 miles). Hochjoch-Schruns is best suited to beginner skiers and snowboarders but there is some terrain for intermediates but little of interest for expert skiers. There are 14 kilometers (9 miles) of cross country ski trails at Hochjoch-Schruns. About one quarter of the pistes at Hochjoch-Schruns are covered by snowmaking. The nearest airport is at Innsbruck.

I have been travelling to the Montafon valley, to ski with my family, for the past 10 years. When we started, it was very unusual to hear another English or Irish speaking person there. Amazingly, it's still rare enough!
The Montafon valley has a huge variety of ski areas available with first-class facilities. Schruns is a lovely town and although it is not as "manic" as other ski resorts, when it comes to night-life, you can still find enough entertainment and excellent restaurants in the town itself and within a short drive/bus journey.
It's Austria's best-kept ski resort secret!
